Data centres play a key role of the development of the Internet, IP networks in general and solutions for business customers. Cloud computing, whether ‘public’ or ‘private’ is the latest trend to drive up demand for data centre services, as all of those apps that are hosted ‘in the cloud’ are in actual fact simply hosted on machines in one or more data centres.
Data centre space has been in short supply for some time and this is especially true in CBD locations where data centres have traditionally been deployed in order to facilitate ease of connectivity to multiple telecommunications carriers.
With rack space at a premium, there is little opportunity for affordable office space at the same locations.
As more fibre services are rolled out in the inner suburbs, data centres are being built ‘close to town’, but not right in the CBD. This has eased physical access problems, and sometimes office space issues, but not entirely. Just try getting in and out of Port Melbourne at 4pm on a Friday!
As Pacific Wireless began delivering more and more redundancy and backup solutions to its corporate customers, it was a natural evolution for us to offer our own data centre solution that closely dovetails with our primary products. And so Niche-DC was born, and we chose the name to reflect that this data centre has a specific purpose and a specific need to fill.
